More About Awa
Awa Sowe is a third-culture child of Gambian and Finnish heritage, raised in Mozambique. She is a dancer, dance teacher, and a performance artist who specializes in teaching twerk culture and history. Awa actively works to create space for black and African culture and the BIPOC community, especially in the Finnish dance scene.
As a performer she loves to get either a melancholic reaction through emotional or deep performances or flirty and humorous reactions through hip shaking and loud facial expressions. She doesn't stick to one style of performing and hence it is what makes her a unique character.
Awa currently produces an accessible and inclusive drag, burlesque and performance art club called Tease & Power with two other producers. The project is funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and has received funds also from the city of Helsinki. Her solo event production since 2022 is a well known, non profit, category concept twerk competition called Bussit Out!
